5 Top Tips for Keeping Safe on the Road in Winter

Winter is well and truly upon us now and with it brings darker evenings and harsher driving conditions.  So, we’ve compiled our 5 Top Tips to help you stay safe on the road.

Prepare for your journey before you set off

It’s a good idea to make sure that you are prepared for your journey, even if it’s just your normal drive into work, or dropping the kids off at school.  If you have a long journey ahead of you, then pre-plan your route and make sure that you have plenty of petrol and refreshments, just in-case there are any long delays. Keep some spare warm clothes in your boot, just in case you break-down.  You don’t have to take your whole wardrobe with you, but we recommend a coat, gloves, a hat and a scarf.  It’s also important to make sure that you have a high vis jacket, so you can be seen by other motorists if you have to exit your vehicle in the dark or in foggy conditions.

Ice Ice baby

If freezing conditions are predicted, then use a windscreen protector to stop ice forming.  If you forget to do this, then leave yourself an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning to de-ice your car, making sure that all windows are clear before you drive off.  Do not be tempted to use boiling hot water to clear your windscreen, as this can cause the glass to crack! A shop de-icer will do the job and can be easily purchased at most supermarkets or petrol stations.

Drive carefully

We know that you should drive carefully all year round, but did you know that your stopping distance is 10 times longer in ice and snow? So, bearing this in mind you’ll want to take it easy and perhaps set off 10 minutes earlier than you would normally. Remember, it’s more important to arrive at your destination in one piece than to get there the quickest!

Check your tyres.

Make sure that you check your tyres for tread and pressure to be safe on the road.  As a general rule of thumb, your tyre tread in winter should be around 3mm.  Letting air out of your tyres to improve grip does not work and is very dangerous, so please do not do this.  Consider getting some winter or all-weather tyres, which are made from a special kind of rubber that provides a better grip in cold and wet conditions.  Contact us today on 0117 3009393.

Keep your vehicle in tip-top condition.

It goes without saying that if you look after your car then things are less likely to go wrong with it. We don’t mean that you have to spend every waking hour giving it attention, but it does need some TLC to ensure that it runs at its optimum performance and doesn’t die when you need it the most.  We recommend having your car serviced on a regular basis, as not only will it help to keep it running for longer, but it can identify any future potential problems.
